Summary/Purpose of Position:

MDG is currently looking for a highly motivated, early-to-mid career scientist to become a member of our Research and Development team. This is a Microbiologist position that requires a Bachelor’s degree typically with 4-8 years of experience, and must possess a strong foundation in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or computational biology. This is predominantly a lab-based role focusing on fundamental research, and has several in-depth responsibilities still requiring guidance from a manager.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Ideally this position will evolve into R&D project management, and the successful candidate would possess and desire the ability to lead projects and teams
  • Has in-depth knowledge and ability to perform relevant laboratory assays and an ability to learn new techniques
  • Designs and executes experiments – ranging from defined protocols to assay development and innovation
  • Analyzes data, formulates conclusions, and determines future experiments
  • Practical understanding and application of statistical methods
  • Prioritizes time to maintain projects deadline and product analysis
  • Evaluates, interprets, and validates laboratory results and reports findings
  • Prepares written reports, technical notes, and presentations for external and internal customers with minimal guidance and editing from a manager
  • Successful candidate will possess high problem solving and critical thinking skills pertaining to research troubleshooting and project development
  • Communicates projects with collaborative teams, managers, and sales and field technicians
  • Coauthors and presents scientific posters and papers and assists with preparing patents
  • Handle and protect confidential and sensitive data with integrity
  • Assists in managing the daily workflow of the laboratory
  • Willingness to help others in the lab, and perform related work and other duties, as assigned

Preferred Relevant Job Experience:

  • Applied and functional knowledge of specialized skillsets such as; cell culture, immunological biomarkers, HPLC, LC-MS or GC-MS, Python/R coding, bioinformatics, or flow cytometry
  • Previous experience and safety knowledge working with a range of microbial organisms, such as bacteria, yeast, and fungi


  • Bachelor’s degree in science or related field or equivalent professional experience
  • Functional and applied knowledge involving laboratory techniques or other specialized knowledge is desired
  • Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 4+ years) or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role

Specialized Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of effective and safe laboratory and experimental procedures
  • Knowledge of the proper use and preparation of culture media, chemicals, and reagents
  • Knowledge of microbiology techniques, terminology, equipment and supplies
  • Requires strong analytical ability to handle data and results
