Yeast

Yeast are not commonly found in activated sludge, but may grow due to the following:
  • Low pH in the system
  • Phosphorus Deficiency
  • Fermentative Conditions
Yeast may also sometimes come in through the “front door” from industrial processes. As with all other organisms, ranking and abundance through microscopicevaluation is a critical step. Yeast can be identified by their budding characteristics. If yeast is found at a common abundance, the next step is to determine the cause and required action if needed.
