Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is not only a nuisance sulfur odor, but can be very toxic. Hydrogen sulfide can be a sign of bigger problems such as biofilm build up, microbially influenced corrosion (MIC), crown corrosion and at times fat, oil and grease (FOG) concerns.
Hydrogen sulfide removal and H2S corrosion can be constant headaches for wastewater, lift stations and other water treatment applications. Microbial Discovery Group has a novel bioaugmentation program for tackling the source of H2S production while also facilitating H2S removal. A variety of options for hydrogen sulfide prevention can be applied by both chemical and biological based programs. The 5-10 day holding time of our pumpable H2 Sulf-Hide chemistry, provides a two prong approach for H2S control when combined with our environmentally friendly bacteria. Similar solutions can be provided for organic sulfide and mercaptan odor control concerns.
Target applications:
- Sewers, industrial pipelines, lift station corrosion (H2S) and odor control
- Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) concerns
- Piping, manhole, and concrete corrosion prevention
- Industrial wastewater and municipalities
- Drain openers and grease trap maintenance

Ammonia (NH3)
Ammonia continues to be a widespread concern across industries including janitorial, pet care, zoos, aquariums, aquaculture, agriculture and wastewater.
Ammonia Odor:
- Pet and human urine and urea degradation release ammonia resulting in ammonia odor control issues for petcare, consumer and institutional markets.
Ammonia Toxicity:
- Ammonia concentrations can build to toxic levels requiring ammonia removal or ammonia control for lakes, ponds, aquariums, aquaculture and agriculture.
Ammonia Removal:
- The breakdown of proteins and amino acids release ammonia into the water creating regular nutrient removal requirements for industrial wastewater and municipalities.
Many bacterial species are known to utilize ammonia as a nitrogen source to produce certain amino acids and other nitrogen containing building blocks. For this reason almost any microbial product will claim to utilize ammonia. Claiming to utilize ammonia and being effective for ammonia control are two very different prospects. Bacillus are somewhat unique in their additional need for ammonia compared to enteric bacteria (E. coli, Klebsiella).
Bacillus organisms regularly accumulate glutamate pools which will be needed for sporecoat production. Ammonia is assimilated by a number of pathways leading directly or indirectly to glutamate biosynthesis preparing for the potential need to sporulate. Beyond the ability of most Bacillus to require extra ammonia, there are some Bacillus strains that exhibit superior ammonia reduction properties while providing a much desired long-shelf life. These attributes from environmentally friendly bacteria can provide excellent solutions for ammonia odor control or ammonia removal.
Other types of bacteria such as Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter and certain Pseudomonas species can also be excellent choices for ammonia reduction. The type of organism used is very dependent on the application, environmental conditions and desired product shelf-life but all can be used as a part of an extremely effective bioaugmentation program.

Odor Control
Beyond ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and mercaptans there is a bounty additional nuisance odors. Many applications are plagued by indole, skatole, amines, thiols, volatile sulfur compounds, volatile fatty acids and even mold and mildew malodors. Let Microbial Discovery Group screen our current library or products for targeted control of your malodor problem. These odor solutions can be used independently or combined with odor binding or odor count eracting technologies to provide a two prong approach for odor control.
Target applications:

Mold and Mildew
Mold and mildew can be a quadruple threat producing malodors, unsightly growth, allergens and toxins. Many of the chemical alternatives to mildew control are ineffective and can create a larger problem than the mold itself. Concerns regarding the harmful effects of black mold has prompted a search for green solutions for regular and black mold treatment.
Target applications:
- Consumer products
- Institutional products
- Construction materials
- Biocontrol agents

Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG)
Fats, oils and grease can be problems for grease trap maintenance and grease trap cleaning, liftstations, municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. Often FOG can be complexed with other organic materials that allow the material to by-pass the fat trapping systems such as grease traps or dissolved air floatation systems (DAF). In some industrial wastewater treatment applications, the natural microflora commonly digest the easily degraded organic material but leave the FOG to accumulate. Fat caps on anaerobic or facultative anaerobic lagoons are extreme examples of fat accumulations where the natural microflora are ineffective. Where there is FOG digestion, there are often odor control concerns due to volatile fatty acid production.
MDG can provide bio-based solutions that are specifically targeted to FOG problems, complementing the natural microorganisms already present. These microbial strains will include degradation of short, medium and long chained fatty acids. The biological products which are effective alone can also be combined with chemical solutions to further enhance the ability to overcome fat, oil and grease interfaces and barriers. MDG also understands that FOG problems are often combined with other waste and odor issues.
Thus custom biological (bacteria and enzymes) and chemical blends can be created for targeted applications yielding FOG degradation and odor reduction capabilities. Bacillus strains with complementary production of lipase, esterase, cellulase, xylanase and protease can be combined specific for your most difficult applications. Bacterial strains with biosurfactant production can also be used to complement the microbial enzyme production abilities of the bioaugmentation program. Other microorganisms including Arthrobacter, Rhodococcus and Pseudomonas can also be useful for fat, oil and grease remediation.
Send us your water or waste prior to application, so we can perform screening to match the best strains or program to ultimately provide your best Biosolution.

Petroleum Hydrocarbons
Petroleum hydrocarbons present problems for industrial wastewater, bioremediation, parts washers and even consumer markets. Various concerns include Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX), toxic volatile organic carbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, n-alkanes, gasoline additives Methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE), Tert butyl alcohol (TBA), Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE).
Biological degradation of these problem compounds can be provided by a variety of different types of bacteria, however due to various properties, microorganisms such as Bacillus, Arthrobacter, Rhodococcus and Pseudomonas are commonly applied individually or in combination to create bioremediation products or biological solutions. For bioremediation, amendments such as micronutrients, electron acceptors, surfactant and biosurfactant producing microbial strains also provide support for petroleum hydrocarbon degradation by indigenous or bioaugmented microflora.

Bioremediation
At MDG we believe the remediation of soils, sludge and water require more than just the addition of packaged microbes. Choosing the right microbial strains, adjusting soil or water chemistry and applying PATTON principals is required to achieve high success rates. These combinations are not to be guessed at, but rather pre-tested to ensure the overall objectives are achieved. We find every site is different; there is no "one size fits all" scenario. An MDG project manager will work closely with you to understand your process or application. Then samples will be analyzed to determine proper microbe selection, adjustment of soil or water chemistry and finally application of PATTON principals. These data will be provided to demonstrate next steps, and for your company to share with your clients. Research, relationships and results are the key to successful bioremediation applications.

Landfills
Landfill applications are very unique and require a focused strategy for success. You will pay the price or reap the benefit for years, if not decades, for the decisions you make now. Due to differences in local or state regulations, targeted solutions for the specific site are required to treat leachate lagoons or deal with the landfills themselves. Common objectives include odor control, hydrocarbon degradation, increased methane production, or accelerated rate of landfill breakdown. Similar to bioremediation, choosing the right strains, nutrient and chemistry adjustments, and applying using PATTON principals is crucial to success.
